French Creek Fishery Improvement Project

FlyWater was hired by a private landowner to undertake a comprehensive design-build fishery improvement project spanning approximately 2,500 linear feet on French Creek outside of Encampment, WY. Construction was completed summer 2023. The overarching objective was to institute significant enhancements in both the aquatic ecosystem and the surrounding riparian environment while expanding recreational opportunities.

FlyWater implemented several habitat improvements, this included installation of new spawning substrates, strategically positioned rock structures, and the integration of large wood structures. Additionally, the project involved excavation to create new pools and enhance existing ones, fostering an environment conducive to diverse aquatic life.

Parallel to the habitat improvements, a secondary goal of the project was to augment accessibility for anglers. This was achieved by clearing and establishing a network of trails, accommodating both foot traffic and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). The execution of this objective showcased a thoughtful balance between technological advancements, utilizing heavy equipment for river enhancements, and meticulous craftsmanship involving a combination of equipment and hand tools for trail development.

Through this project, FlyWater not only demonstrated its engineering prowess but also its commitment to ecological balance and sustainable practices. The result is a revitalized stretch of French Creek.
