BUTCHERKNIFE CREEK IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
FlyWater, inc. was contracted by the Yampa Valley Stream Improvement Charitable Trust to design and construct a comprehensive habitat improvement project on a section of Butcherknife Creek in Steamboat Springs, CO. The project reach was defined as approximately 2,300 linear feet of Butcherknife Creek as it flows through Steamboat Springs School District RE 2 property. The primary objective of this project was to enhance the ecological health and biodiversity of the creek.
To achieve this, the project focused on increasing deep water holding areas, which are crucial for providing refuge and breeding grounds for trout species. Additionally, the project aimed to add substantial instream cover, such as submerged tree structures and vegetation, to create a more complex and supportive habitat for trout species.
These enhancements are expected to significantly improve trout habitat, making the creek more accessible for angling. By increasing the availability of suitable habitats, the project also aims to boost the overall biodiversity of the creek, supporting a wider range of aquatic and riparian species.
Ultimately, the goal is to uplift and enhance the entire creek ecosystem, providing long-term environmental benefits and increased opportunities for community engagement and enjoyment of the natural surroundings.
